There's a great deal of static, interspersed with the sound of swearing and then a precariously tilted look at a wall and the edge of a bunk, before the image finally rights itself and clears to reveal Jayne's way-to-close-to-the-screen face.

"Testing, testing."

Once he seems satisfied it's working (though how he knows is anybody's guess), he backs up slightly and peers very seriously at the tablet, like he's got something real important to say, and wants to be sure it doesn't get lost to a malfunctioning machine.

"Uh, so. Where's the whores?"

Jayne kind of rolls his eyes. Really, if he understood the secret ways of loose women, don't you think he'd be way too busy to get into the kind of trouble seems to follow him around? "Could be I'll find out after I get down to the pink house, though. Want me t' see if they got boy whores?"

Judging by the reactions of others, there isn't a pink house. She'll be nice and let the guy feel helpful, though. "If you do find it, s'pose it wouldn't hurt to check."

"Might as well, we all know the Doc ain't got more blood than a dead fish in 'im." Sometimes he almost feels sorry for Kaylee and her weird misguided pining.

Yeah, there's that look again. "He ain't so bad, Jayne. Just gotta give him a bit of time, s'all." A lot of time, it didn't matter. Hopefully it'd be worth the wait.

"There ain't that much time in the whole gorram 'verse." The day Jayne has something voluntarily positive to say about Simon is the day you should probably lock him up and take away his guns. "You think him and that sister 'a his...?"

"He means well, Jayne," she tries again, even though she already knows the answer, "he's just got a different way of showin' it than most folk." A pause, a blink. "Don't be goin' off on River, either, Jayne. You just haven't given 'em enough of a chance yet, you'll see."

"You keep thinkin' that." Maybe Simon means well toward Kaylee, hell everybody means well toward Kaylee. Doesn't make him less of a pain in the ass all the other times, though. "She ain't right, you know it, we all know it, an' that ain't gonna change just by thinkin' happy thoughts."

She will keep thinking it, until something proves her wrong. How is it that nobody on this crew except her and Book can ever see any decent side to a person? Well, she has to give Inara and Wash a bit of credit, too... "Ain't gonna change it by sayin' she's a lost cause, neither."

Jayne would say he'd laugh if something ever happened that Kaylee just couldn't find anything positive to say about, but deep down he kind of has to admit that never happens. "I ain't tryin' to change things, just pointin' out how things are."

Any day Kaylee wasn't able to find the positive side of things was never a good sign for anyone, really. Including herself. It was much preferred to just stay positive and happy. "Not everybody's the same person. She's just a girl, Jayne. Lost a little right now, maybe, but you don't gotta be so hard on her."

"She's a crazy girl who wants to kill me!" These truths can't be argued, although it could be said River's not the only one. "An' her brother wants to do freakish doctor experiments."

"Jayne," Kaylee says, a little slower than before, "Simon ain't tryin' to experiment. If you'd sit still and let him do what he's gotta, you'd see he's just tryin' to help you."
