x [ location: sanctuary for all ] (locked to uhura).

[ backdated to shortly after gaila's arrival in taxon. yay for back tagging! ]

There were few people who understood what this felt like, to have someone you were once close to and called friend come back from the dead, so to speak, after you'd already dealt with and moved past their passing. Where Gaila was concerned, Kirk knew of one other person who was feeling what he was about now and she was probably taking it a lot harder than he was. If there was anyone who knew Gaila better than he did, it was her: Uhura.

It was because of that (and the fact that it was a captain's duty to tend to the morale issues of his crew, but really, that was just something he kept telling himself for an added excuse as to why he was suddenly motivated to do this) that Kirk pulled himself out of his personal corner of lone pondering on the subject and sought her out -- or, rather, placed himself in front of the door to her bedroom within the Sanctuary For All, raised his hand and knocked.

It took Uhura a moment to answer the door as she found a robe to slip on over her pajamas. Once that task was completed, she hurried to answer it, worried that it might have been Gaila.

It wasn't, and she was pretty surprised to see who was standing there, but after thinking about it for a moment, it made sense to her. She wasn't sure how close the two of them had actually been before the Narada incident - she'd made it a point not to know too much about it - but she knew Gaila's arrival had probably gotten to him, too.

She didn't know why he was here, though.

After regarding him for a long moment, she finally spoke up.

"Can I help you?"

Part of her wanted to argue that on Gaila's behalf. She bit back her response after thinking about it for a moment and realizing it was probably true. And truthfully, she was too worn out to argue about anything.

So she nodded, stepping aside to let him in and shutting the door behind him. She gestured to the desk chair and managed to find a place of her own to sit before speaking. Despite her distress, her posture was still perfect, arms crossed modestly over her chest and the silk robe covering the parts of her skin that her pajamas didn't. (Which was a fair amount, given what she usually wore to bed.)

"What did you say to her?"

"No," she said, shaking her head. "It didn't seem right to."

She was quiet for a moment. "But it doesn't seem right not to, either. I mean, when she got here...I think the ship had just been hit. She mentioned the crew of the Farragut being dead. And she said she'd had injuries, but those healed, somehow."

She was grateful they had. She didn't know how she would have held it together if Gaila had arrived with her injuries in tact.

"Gaila's not stupid. I think she knows something bad happened to her, but I'm not sure whether or not she knows what it is yet."

Her eyes filled with tears and she quickly looked in her lap, trying to push them back. She'd somehow succeeded in not crying all evening and didn't want to start now.

"I don't know what to do."

Uhura looked up at him and nodded her agreement. She knew that it wouldn't be right to keep such information from Gaila because she found it hard to tell her. And she knew that if it had been her, she would want to know, too.

She wiped underneath her eyes with the back of her hand, clearing her throat. "So...how do you propose we go about telling her? Should I tell her myself, or should we tell her together? I'm not sure how to go about this."
