Well, Buffy was perhaps a bit hyper-aware of her own definition, considering the epic fashion in which she screwed up with Riley, her last real relationship, in the traditional sense of the word-- she certainly didn't want to make the same mistakes again, and take Kirk for granted or make him feel like he didn't matter to her.
