[ visual ] | [ location: castle summers ] oh no don't you touch my boyfriend he's not your boyfriend
When the feed first clicks on, everything seems normal. Just your average, everyday pain in the butt accidental video post facilitated by your friendly neighborhood nosy alien overlords. Dawn is looking through her closet, staring at her clothes consideringly.
Then, out of nowhere? Electric guitars, sounding out the intro to--
"Now listen--
Not a dime, I can't pay my rent
I can barely make it through the week
Saturday night I'd like to make my girl
But right now I can't make ends meet."
That. Dawn is suddenly in motion, dancing around her room in a way that's both appropriate for a Whitesnake video and seemingly previously choreographed. And the guitars have been joined by drums and bass, also seemingly out of nowhere.
"I'm always working slaving every day
Gotta get away from that same old same old
I need a chance just to get away
If you could hear me think this is what I'd say--"
Pause for some serious rocker face, right at the tablet.
"Don't need nothing but a good time
How can I resist?
Ain't looking for nothing but a good time
And it don't get better than this."
Then as soon as it starts, the music cuts out and Dawn is left blinking in confusion, hairbrush clenched tight in her hand.
"Oh, wow. That was. Really, really weird."

[voice]
[Because seriously, someone showing up to make the world a living musical has just happened a few months ago for Tara, and that was plenty.]
Are you okay?
[ voice ]
[ and now, more music. ]
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee're okay!
[ the music cuts out, leaving dawn looking even more bemused than before. ]
So, um. I seem to be singing? Without meaning to.
[ voice ]
Well, that's... that's good. Do you think it's the same demon as before? Or something new?
[ voice ]
[ hark! is that another musical into? ]
Am I the one in control?
Am I the one at the wheel?
Last time I checked, it was my turn to say how I feel
Cause you're not the one going through with it
and you're not the one who gotta do it
Am I the one at the wheel?
[ and then a disgusted sigh. ]
So apparently, I'm communicating in song today. Great.
[ voice ]
[And another musical intro.]
Nothing's gonna harm you, not while I'm around.
Nothing's gonna harm you, no sir, not while I'm around.
Demons are prowling everywhere, nowadays,
I'll send 'em howling,
I don't care, I've got ways.
[Well, I guess that answers that question.] ...oh.
[ voice ]
There is a part I can't tell about the dark I know well--
[ she might have actually clapped a hand over her mouth on that one. after a short awkward pause she continues. (in speech this time, thank god.) ]
Not just me and you. Xander too.
[ voice ]
[She speaks slowly and deliberately, as if this will help.]
So. It's either a demon again, or a glitch, I suppose. We'll figure it out.
[ voice ]
"It doesn't matter-- what can't we face if we're together?
What's in this place that we can't weather?"
She makes a face after it fades out, but it's less annoyed than before.
[ voice ]
[ voice ]
[ she hesitates, then asks quietly (after waiting to make sure no musical numbers are about to cut her off) ]
Are you okay?
[ voice ]
[ visual ]
"Well she's all you'd ever want
She's the kind they'd like to flaunt and take to dinner
Well she always knows her place
She's got style, she's got grace, she's a winner."
Aaaand click. And twirl.
"She's a Lady. Whoa whoa whoa, she's a Lady
Talkin' about that little Lady, and the Lady is mine."
Pause. "Okay, what the hell?"
[ visual ]
"So. Not just me." She blows a strand of hair out of her face-- random gyrations mid-outfit choosing makes for messy ponytails, apparently-- and sighs. "Please tell me that gross demon isn't here to mess with us all again."
The blowing isn't working, so she raises a hand to brush the hair away. "Yours was a nice song, though. I mean, I liked it. It was sweet!"
And then it's apparently time to cue music, again.
"Yeah I'll tell you something
I think you'll understand when I say that something
I wanna hold you hand--
I wanna hold your hand.
I wanna hold your hand."
Aaaaaaaaaaand scene.
[ visual ]
"I promise I didn't summon anything this time. I've been cutting right back on the demon evocation. Once bitten twice not ever going to touch a spellbook again." Sigh. "Thanks though, I liked yours too, and..."
Oh wait, is that music? Why yes, it is.
"I was made for loving you, baby
You were made for loving me
And I can't get enough of you, baby
Can you get enough of me"
[ visual ]
Anyone who thinks she maybe just wants to see if they can do an epic duet would be... so totally right, carry on.
Also carrying on? The music. This time it's bouncy and sweet, somewhat Broadway-esque.
"Live in my house,
I'll be your shelter,
Just pay me back
With one thousand kisses
Be my lover
and I'll cover you
Open your door,
I'll be your tenant
Don't got much baggage to lay at your feet
But sweet kisses I've got to spare
I'll be there and I'll cover you."
...She doesn't even bother to look annoyed after. What? It was cute.
[ visual ] / [ location: castle summers ]
"You make a good point - okay, I'm on my way. Be with you in T minus 30 seconds."
With that he's off and making his way to Dawn's room, and when he gets there (not bothering to knock, it seems kind of redundant) he's accompanied by the sounds of Motown horns as he opens the door.
"If you need me, call me
No matter where you are
No matter how far
Just call my name
I'll be there in a hurry
You don't have to worry
'Cause baby,
There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you"
Okay, he might be looking mildly sheepish after that one.
[ location ]
By the time it's done she's sticking her head into Dawn's room and staring at her like she's grown a second, singing head.
"Dawn?"
It's a legitimate question. There might be bodysnatching or podperson issues to consider.
[ location ]
"River. I have no idea what's going on."
But there it is again: that sneaky, sneaky song intro. And Dawn is singing again, but this time, River, she's singing to you.
"It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year
but I'll be there for you
When the rain starts to pour
I'll be there for you
Like I've been there before
I'll be there for you
Because you're there for me too..."
Those are some meaningful faces being sent River's way, wow. Then the music stops and Dawn is doing her best (non-musical) imitation of a fire hydrant.
[ location ]
Then, of course, the music swells again.
"I'm limited
Just look at me - I'm limited
And just look at you
You can do all I couldn't do, Dawn
So now it's up to you
For both of us - now it's up to you..."
Not that River notices yet that she's singing, too, in a warbley voice that can't quite stay on the right notes.
[ location ]
"I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you."
She's standing next to River now, hairbrush forgotten in favor of brushing their shoulders together and singing to the imaginary cheap seats.
"Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good."
[ location ]
"It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You'll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend."
Somewhere, audience members are shedding tears as River turns away from their imaginary cheap seats to sing to Dawn.
"Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you."
[ visual ]
"...Dawn?"
[ visual ]
"Hi Uhura."
[ visual ]
"Don't worry, you sounded pretty good. Have you ever -"
And then some music kicks in in the background, background singers and all, and Uhura finds herself singing:
"Keep your head up high
Don't you know you are the superfly?
And that ain't no lie
Well it's a Saturday night, you know the feeling is right
Don't you know we'll get so high
Get down, get deeper and down
Get down, get deeper and down
Saturday night
Get down, deeper and down
Get down, get deeper and down
Saturday night
Wanna get down, wanna get down
Wanna get down Saturday night
Wanna get down, wanna get down,
Wanna get down Saturday night
Wanna get down, wanna get down
Wanna get down Saturday night
Wanna get down, wanna get down
Wanna get down Saturday night."
The music suddenly stops, and she blinks in reaction.
"...Apparently you're not alone in this."
[Visual]
That wasn't right. The dawn chorus belonged to other birds. She was too soft, too fragile, too important. It was difficult to sing when you were wrapped up in cotton wool and guarded by the Slayer.
A pleasant sound, though. She danced as if she could hear the rhythm of the universe, just like Drusilla. The vampire watched her until the music stopped, then, with a slight smile on her face, began to clap.
