Rose is walking up the stairs with a tray of tea things. She takes a deep breath, pauses and leans against the wall, cocking one hip out to support the tray while she starts singing:

She moves to the landing a bit more, twirls around smoothly as not to disturb the things on the tray then approaches the door while she continues to sing:

Finally she opens the bedroom door and steps inside. The Doctor is there in bed, looking a bit rough. She sits the tea tray on the nightstand and continues her song:

The Doctor hears her coming up the stairs. Oh, no. It's affected her too. It's a nice enough song, but whatever it is has infected a huge chunk of the population. This is really, really bad.

"Feeling musical?"

This would be Rose turning more than a bit pink. "S'pose so. Seems like most the city has come down with it." She pours two cups of tea, makes his up the way he likes it and hands it off.

She perches on the edge of the bed next to him. "Guess it's amusing to the hamsters."

"A bit, I don't doubt it," he says. "But you have to be more careful, Rose. There's more at stake than just them."

"Entertaining the whole city you mean?" Rose asks. She's hoping to avoid the fact that the song was obviously about the Doctor.

"No, no," he says. "People are gong to start thinking we're---well, figuring out we're---"

He gestures to her, then back to himself. "We don't want that. Don't need them gossiping about us."

Rose takes a breath and poses a question. "Why do the neighbors chatter all day, behind their doors?"

The Doctor sighs. It's ridiculous, all the people standing around, talking about them. If word gets back to the Master, or to Judith, or to any of the Doctor's enemies about him and Rose, she's in very serious trouble.

"I know a way," he says, "To prove what they say is quite untrue."

He points in her direction, oblivious to the sudden music that appears to be swelling in the background. "Here is the gist, a practical list of don'ts for you."

Rose looks terribly offended. She glares at him, furrows her brow and opens her mouth to argue, just as oblivious to the swell of music.

♩"Some people claim that you are to blame as much as I.
Why do y' take the trouble to bake my favorite pie?"♩

The Doctor shakes his head and points.

"♫ Don't throw boquets at me
Don't please my mates too much
Don't laugh at my jokes too much
People will say we're in love. ♫"

Oh, no. He's singing. Again.

She gasps and stands up, pacing the room a moment as she gives him a 'well I never...' look.

"♪Grantin' your wish, I carved our initials on that tree.♪"--And I never--that's not the point here--"♪Jist keep a slice of all the advice you give so free.
Don't praise my charm too much
Don't look so vain with me
Don't stand in the rain with me
People will say we're in love!♪"

After a moment, he shrugs. This isn't so bad, actually, seeing as it's Rose and they're apparently dueting.

He can handle a duet.

"♫ Don't sigh and gaze at me
Your sighs are so like mine
Your eyes mustn't glow like mine
People will say we're in love! ♫"

He's right. It's not so bad. It could be worse of course. She smirks at him and shakes her head.

"My sighs do not sound like yours," she laughs then resumes the singing as she sits back down on the bed beside him.

"♪Don't take my arm too much
Don't keep your hand in mine
Your hand feels so grand in mine
People will say we're in love!
Don't dance all night with me
Till the stars fade from above.
They'll see it's alright with me
People will say we're in love.♪"

He tucks a lock of hair behind her ear and continues on his lovely little list.

"♫ Don't start collecting things
Give me my suit jacket and my glove. ♫"

He's not entirely sure what glove he's referring to. But, however, it does rhyme.

"♫ Sweetheart they're suspecting things
People will say we're in love. <i?♫"

The music swells a bit then fades away. Rose laughs and leans over him. "You are not getting your suit jacket back. It looks smashing on me." She presses a light, hesitant kiss to his lips. She's supposed to be mad at him. She knows this but he's hurt and they were singing a duet. She can't be mad when they were singing a duet.

He cups the side of her face and kisses her back.

"You know, that wasn't actually so bad, I think. Well, for forced singing by a strange mystical city."

"I think we were fantastic," Rose grins as she very carefully settles in alongside the Doctor. She's careful to arrange pillows and not put any weight on him yet maintain physical contact with him. "Not hurtin' you am I?" she asks.

She wants them both to be comfy when she asks about the sword fight. Hopefully without music but today, you never know.

"Ah, I'm fine," he says. "Healing trance set me forward at least a month. Should be right as rain in a few days. Well, as right as rain can be."

Oh, god. The conversation. They're about to have the conversation he just dealt with with Tara.

He braces himself for it.

Oh good. Well Rose being Rose and the Doctor being the Doctor, she knows they won't actually finish the conversation. They'll either end up arguing or snogging or being entirely silly and irrelevant so she's going to get right to the point.

"That desperate to leave me here?"

She won't chastise him over fighting with the Master. She gets that. Especially since he's trapped here. She won't even chastise him for getting hurt. He'll heal. She will dress him down for trying to get himself killed though.

"It's got nothing to do with you," he says, and he looks away from her immediately.

She can't understand. It's not that she might not, it's that she can't. If she does, she won't---she won't be able to take it, he thinks.

Look at Rose being calm and accepting that it's not about her. "Okay. So tell me what it's all about?"

She might. He shouldn't underestimate her. It's a good rule. Don't underestimate Rose Tyler

He looks over to Rose and sets his jaw.

The Master is a non-topic for him.

"You wouldn't understand."

"Yeah?" Rose arches her eyebrow at him giving him her 'not buying your bullshit' look. "'Cause I'm human and not clever enough. Not a brilliant genius like you and the Master? 'Cause it doesn't have anything to do with the whole enemy thing. Doctor, if you think I wouldn't understand enemies and revenge you have never been a teenage girl in the upper classes."

Okay well it goes without saying that he hasn't been. Plus it's kind of silly and maybe it'll relax that whole cold thing he's got going that she hates when he does. Of course she doesn't hate it that much. She's not moving away from him.

"And if you think I'd throw myself on a sword for someone I had a feud with in upper classes, you're very, very wrong," he says. She's trying, and it's actually infuriating him. He doesn't want his relationship with the Master compared to...teenagers.

Rose bites her tongue and sits up, moving away from him. He's being a jerk. She's not sure if he realizes it or not though. "I don't know what to think because you won't talk to me! I'm not telepathic or psychic. You don't have to tell me all about your history with him. I just want to know why you ran yourself through with a sword. I'm tryin' to help, Doctor. I'm tryin-" she stops and bites her bottom lip. "You're not going to push me away. You can get mad at me all you like. You can act like a jerk but I'm not going anywhere. I came to far to find you. I did too many things to get here."

"Maybe you should've stayed away, then," the Doctor says, and from his tone, he sounds like he means it.

He doesn't want her away, though. He knows this. He wants to reach out, take her hand, and pretend that all of the bad things from the night before never happened.

But they did and he can't erase it.

"Bet the asshole you're turning into woulda liked that. Sorry, Doctor. It doesn't work that way with me." Rose snaps then gets off the bed and walks across the room to sit down on the floor, her back to the bed. She's not leaving but she refuses to be cuddly when he's being a jerk to her. Broken? Sure she'll snuggle. Hurt? Guarantee for hugs but when he goes all cold and angry like this at her, she'll snap back at him.

The foul language almost makes him flinch.

"You think this is bad?" the Doctor snaps. "After the things I've done to the universe, Rose, this is me on a nice day. A good day. A happy day. A day with songs and sunshine, that's today in comparison to the arsehole I've been in the past. Do you understand?"

"Yeah. Got the memo. Still staying." And somehow their conversations just devolve into this. She stretches, reaching for a book, her back still to him. Once she's got it she crosses her legs, opens it and begins to read. "Besides, there were songs."

"The Master is a non-topic," he finally says. "We don't discuss him, except if he's trying to do something, do you understand? He's not up for discussion."

She doesn't answer for a little while. It isn't about the Master to her. It's about the fact that the Doctor tried to kill himself. She knows that the issues aren't separate in the Doctor's head though. That's been made clear.

"Fine. Next time you decide you're going to kill yourself, want to jot something down for me? Be a bit less with the panic and outright fear then."

It's a lie. She wouldn't but she wants him to know that to her, this isn't a conversation about the Master.

"If the Master's involved, don't worry about it," he says. "Just----let me die."

He takes a breath and considers his words.

"Sounds a bit dramatic, doesn't it?"

She keeps her back to him. This conversation is going to make her cry and he's seen her cry enough here.

"Just a bit."

There's more she wants to say about it; things she wants to yell at him but the last statement sounded sane and less cold. Rose has a thing about not undoing all the progress she makes either on purpose or on accident.

"Well, stick to it. He's my responsibility and I'll make my own decisions about what happens with him."

He knows it sounds crazy, but he can't care. it's too important.

"Doctor, I've been in world where you died, 'member?" Rose says, her back still to him. She's leafing through her book more to give her shaking hands something to do. "Selfishly, I don't want to lose you. Ever. You're supposed to live so much longer than me. You're supposed to remember me when I'm dust in my grave. Outside of all my selfish reasons for wanting you to live, there's also the rest of the Universe. You make it a better place. You save us all. And if you save us all then you save other worlds too. If you die, the entire human race becomes extinct. After that, I'm guessing everyone except the Daleks."

"I don't care," he says, his voice cold. "When it comes to the Master and I, just let it go."

Her response is just as cold as his. "Alright then. Guess it's a good thing Mickey and I ended on good terms. Won't be dyin' over him and leaving the rest of the world to fend for itself."

The truth is, she knows when she's up against a wall she doesn't have the energy to climb just to see if there's a way over. She'd rather just let it drop for better or worse. She sighs a little and turns around. She has his glasses perched on her nose.

"Also on the list of things we don't discuss. Me givin' back your suit jacket or your glasses."

She hates fighting with him. That could be another reason their conversations never get finished.

"I'm serious," he says. "I'm sorry, Rose, but---it's too important."

He makes a face. "And I like those glasses."

"So am I. You're going to die here by choice and leave us all alone with him. He'll then kill us all probably painfully. You've made up your mind, Doctor. You're the one who sees all of time and space. Not me so who am I to change your mind. I've known I was going to die beside you or for you or with you for a long time now. Yeah, it scares me. I don't want to die but I don't have to tell you that."

She looks down at the book in her hand, leafing through it a moment. "I can see why. They're brilliant."

"You don't die," he says. "I know how it ends, Rose, and you don't. That's not how it works out."

He gestures for her to come to the bed.

"Please."

The Doctor doesn't play fair. He really, really doesn't. Rose bites her bottom lip, resisting for maybe two seconds before she caves. She stands up and slinks to the bed, lying down beside him and curling up against him with her head on his shoulder. She's not as careful about hurting him right now but she figures he's a not!alien boyfriend. he can take it.

"And you don't die here, Doctor. I know because the last thing I remember before coming here was running to you. Besides, you said I save you."

"You already did," he says. He presses a kiss to her hair and shifts so he can put an arm around her.

He's just grateful she didn't ask him to choose. Between her and the Master, he knows the answer.

Oh Rose is ridiculously easy. At least she knows she's being ridiculously easy. She snuggles up against him, pressing a kiss to his chest. "This all it takes? Because I could've gotten the Ninth you to stop brooding a lot fast if I'd realized he just needed cuddles," she teases him.

Rose does too. It's the reason she didn't ask. She knows he loves her but she's still just a 21 year old girl in love with a much older man. Her insecurities wouldn't ever allow her to assume he'd pick her.
