Kirk stood outside the doors to the severed bridge of the ship he hadn't seen in over a year. There used to be a hallway here - to the right, sickbay and to the left, the transporter room. Both were gone, sent home along with the people they'd accompanied. Sickbay had vanished months ago with Doctor McCoy, but the transporter room was a more recent disappearance, gone with Uhura. Both she and Spock were now absent from Taxon.

Part of him was glad they were gone. No-one deserved to be here. Better they be home, leading the lives they were supposed to than here in sometimes apocalyptic hamsterland. The other part was angry and jealous; felt abandoned and alone. Irrational, he realized, but hey, he was only human.

He took a step towards the doors and they parted obediently, granting him access to the Enterprise's remaining piece. Once on the bridge, he lifted the tablet he'd known was on all along into view so he could look at the screen directly. For once, he'd actually turned it on himself and wasn't just the tablet glitch that plagued Taxon's residents.

"To those of you who knew them, Commander Spock and Lieutenant Nyota Uhura have been sent home."

Kirk gave the quick order to the computer to allow general access to the bridge before slumping down into his chair. Only the humming of the computer soothed him and even then, it was a false comfort, an illusion of being on the real thing. He put stars on the viewscreen, but that would never fully convince him he was back on the real thing. You could feel the engines beneath your feet - subtle, but there. None of that was present here. Just the bridge, disconnected from everything.

Just like him.

True to her word, she was over there in just over a minute. She slowed down and took her time once she came upon the Enterprise, though, drinking in every detail. It may have only been part of a ship, but damn was she gorgeous.

"Wow," Kara murmured quietly as she walked onto the bridge. "I figured she'd be a good ship but... She's a good ship, if you get the difference."

Kirk swiveled around in his chair to face her, offering a smile in attempt to focus on something good instead of dwelling on the bad. He'd done that once already here in Taxon and the place it had taken him to hadn't been pretty. As tempting as sliding back down to that level was, he didn't want to get stuck there again. He was better than that.

"Isn't she? And a lot bigger than this usually, I promise."

"I figured as much," she said with a smile. "Still. This is pretty impressive, Jim." She walks over to The Chair and peers at the controls curiously. "So is this where everything happens?"

"Not everything. A good portion of the orders are given from here, things are monitored and controlled, but the brunt of the work is done down below." He pointed to the floor as if the lower, less shiny portions of the ship rested beneath his feet and not the dirt of the Taxon soil. "I may be her captain, but the Enterprise is the sum of her parts. Without my crew, she's just another ship."

Kara just smiled at Jim as he talked, thoroughly amused and impressed by his little speech. "You know, I think there's a lot of people who wouldn't actually get that. It's cool to see someone who does."

Sh turned and looked over at all the consoles and her face lit up. "So you gonna show me how all this works or do I just get to press buttons until something interesting happens?"

"It's a shame more don't give their credit they deserve." As full of himself as Kirk was, even he knew better than to take the credit all for himself. They would've never made it out of the Nero Incident alive if not for everyone doing their jobs to the best of their ability, everyone working together to accomplish the amazing things that they had that day. He might've been the face of all that when it was all said and done, but he hadn't done it alone by any means.

He laughed at that. "It doesn't do much without the rest of her. Though, this--" He stood and went over to the console next to her and pointed a series of buttons on the flat panel. "Tap here and then here. That turns the view screen on."

"It doesn't just happen on ships, either, unfortunately. The little guys don't get nearly enough recognition," Kara said distractedly as she watched Jim point. She followed his instructions and then looked over to the giant window-type thing at the front of the bridge expectantly.

The screen sprang to life instantly, covering up the image of the Taxon landscape in favor of the faux display of stars that whipped past like the ship was at warp. A small comfort that doesn't entirely convince him, but does well enough to distract when he needed it.

Her face lit up as she watched the screen, a happy and awed look crossing her face. "Oh, Rao... That's amazing," she murmured quietly as she watched the fake stars zoom past.

"It's just an illusion, of course," he explained. "Something I pulled out of the ship's database. Helps me pretend like she's all here."

"Even so," she said, turning her smile to Jim, "It's amazing. Makes this place feel a little more like home, being able to see the stars moving past."
