System Glitch: In The City

The artificial sun rises in the artificial sky... just like every day in Taxon. For some of the inhabitants, this has been going on long enough to be very routine.

This morning, though, the light shines over quite a few gaps in the city's architecture. There is no Oxford library, no Hedge Maze. A number of the private residences are simply gone, those that people brought with them to Taxon. And the streets are very empty, indeed: no Extras on the sidewalks, no Extras driving cars. No smiling faces in the corner coffee shop. The trams rattle around the city with nary a soul on board. The streets are silent.

But it's not just the Extras who are gone. Most of the familiar faces are, too. The tablets show only a very short list of 'Contacts'-- those few citizens left in the city proper.

Save for a small handful of Taxon's prisoners-- left rattling around like the last pills in a nearly empty bottle-- the city is deserted, and silent as the grave.

"Give me a few moments to find you."

The feed cut for a couple of seconds before flickering back up. "I'm at the Sanctuary now." And it was silent. And smelt of nothing.

Azkadellia sat very still, clinging to the tablet. Nothing was right and those years of memories that weren't her own melted into the pain of being abandoned, that utter and total fear.

She jumped when it came back on, dropping it with a shriek.

"Remus?!"

She slid off the bench, picking up the tablet. "I'm... to the north. Not far," she said, words coming out with a tremble.

"Sorry. Apparation disrupts the tablet. I'm heading north, I'll be there in a few moments."

She made a sound, choking back against shriek. She didn't even know what apparation was, but in that moment she had been certain that he too was gone.

Standing, she knew there was no sense looking around. Neither would be hard to spot, they were the only ones that seemed to be out and about in the city.

Remus rounded the corner, dropping his tablet into his pocket and jogging over towards Azkadellia.

She didn't think, launching herself into his arms and hugging him tight. 'Oh Ozma, you're here. Someone is alive. I thought... I thought I was alone."

He caught her, hugging her back. "It's all right, I'm here. There's bound to be others around, I'm sure we can find them." He rubbed her back soothingly. "It's okay."

"I can't reach DG but the map still shows her," she whimpered, pressing her face to his chest. "And Glitch... Glitch isn't here at all."

"It's all right, it's probably just one of these... little scenarios." He hoped so, desperately hoped so. "And Cain's still here."

"Thank you for not calling them glitches," she whispered. "Yes. Yes he is. I just... What if DG's next? Or you?"

"Well, it seems rude and Glitch has asked people to try not to."

He patted her back. "It could be you. It might be no one."

"I wish he had let me call him Ambrose," she admitted, sniffling.

"But so many are just gone. No one said it happened like that."

"I- Can offer no insight. I'm sorry. I haven't seen anything like this. Especially not the lack of the fill in people, the Extras. But I haven't been here terribly long."

She nodded, knowing there wasn't much he could do or know. "Remus, please. Tell me you won't lock yourself away. Not right now. Not until this is fixed," she whispered.

"No. Not until it's fixed," he agreed after a long moment. "But, if I start to shift, you have to use your magic to stop me, at any cost, before I hurt someone."

She nodded, much more eager for that than for him to disappear again. "I promise you, Remus. I won't let you hurt anyone."

"Thank you." At least there were few people for him to hurt if anything happened.

She sighed, taking a deep breath and then hiccuping. "I'm so scared," she admitted in a low voice. "I hate being scared."

"What are you scared of, Azkadellia?" His voice was soothing and calm and soft

"Losing everyone. First Glitch and than who? DG? Cain? You?" She shuddered at the thought, eyes closing tight.

"Being alone isn't so terrible, I promise you. I don't think it'll happen, but it truly isn't as terrifying as it seems."

"I've been alone," he said in a low whisper. "Alone in the back of her mind, watching her kill and imprison everyone I love while using my hands to do it."

"No you haven't," he whispered back. "Because she was always there as well."

She shuddered and pulled away, wrapping her arms tightly over her chest. "If you are upset I needed help and drew you out of your home, I apologize," she whispered, taking it all entirely wrong and worrying he was cross with her.

"I'm not upset." His hand came to her elbow. "At all. It takes a lot to upset me and I don't think you're capable of it. I'm trying to explain the difference between what happened to you and genuine alone."
