On the evening of the twenty-second day of the tenth month, the chilly weather takes on a slightly different shroud: veiling itself in brighter starlight and clearer air and a crisp, pitch black cloak of darkness...lit up by streetlamps and bright, autumnal window displays, and carved vegetables as far as the eye can see.

It's not just Jack what makes a lantern this time of year, but courgettes and bird cages (birds not included) and jars and actual wrought iron lanterns. Candle light permeating the very air of the city, casting a warm glow on anyone who happens to draw close enough.

Here and there Extra parents tug their Extra children along in a hurried quest to find the perfect outfit or costume for this or that party, spooky or sweet or just plain excellent.

What's more is the long winding carnival snaking its way along the many winding streets of Taxon, hundreds of Extras all dressed up in outfits that some may find more disturbing than others: zombies, ghouls, old crones and Killer Klowns and white-masked beings, moaning and wheezing and giggling their way towards Central Square - but who knows where they're headed next.

Fun fair's in town, kids.

"It is a little strange but I've known people called a lot stranger things than that. There are a lot of 'Black' something or others at home," she says with a small shrug.

"Yeah, same here. Black Widow, Black Panther, Black Knight, Black Cat... although I guess that could be your name, too."

"There's no reason for that to be my name, it doesn't make any sense, really," Selina says as she shrugs. "So, we have that much in common, it seems, at home. Lots of people with weird names."

"Black cat suit, but it doesn't make sense. Gotcha," he says with a teasing smirk.

"Take it you don't have mutants where you come from, though?"

"It didn't start out black," she says with a small shrug. "Mutants.... Well, there are some people with meta-genes but... there aren't a lot of them? And there are so many people with powers through so many different ways that it just seems like one more thing."

"You'd think that'd be the case, but for some reason it ain't. Next stage in evolution tends to freak out the last stage too much, I guess."

His head leans into his hand, propped up by his elbow on the bar as he rubs beneath his nose in thought. Regarding her.

"What color was it originally? Can't imagine you'd go tabby colored..."

"We have so many aliens and magicians that metas, well, how would anyone know the difference?"

Selina shrugs a bit and then makes a face at him, pulling back a bit, "Please. No, it was purple for awhile. Grey for awhile. Lots of different fashions, depending on what I could afford."

"Guess there's some kinda difference between 'powers by accident' and 'powers by birth.' Although they don't ever seem too shaken up about gods walkin' the earth. Even let 'em have a little floatin' god city in Oklahoma. But yer kid turns out to be a mutant? Can't ostracize fast enough."

The cigar makes its way back into his mouth, puffing away that thought.

"You got a lotta purple cats along with all those aliens?"

"Weird. I guess we have enough to worry about without having to worry about that. I don't think we have that many metas but a /lot/ of people who got powers by experiment or accident...."

Selina arches a brow at him and shakes her head, "No. I just started with what I had."

"Don't help matters that we get too many of the types o' super-powerful mutants who let that power go to their heads, thinkin' bein' the next stage of evolution means we have ta turn around and conquer humanity. Kinda like vampires who see humans as cattle the second they're turned. PR ain't the best when a guy like me is one of the good ones."

Stogie's back in the ash tray. Beer is thumbed as the ponderance of where the hell he's been floats through his mind.

"What kickstarted you? Since you don't sound like you're a 'meta,' figure you'd need a little extra push to get into this nutcase arena."

"A combination of seeing someone else in a costume plus being tired of having nothing and no way out," Selina says remembering those earlier days with Holly in that tiny apartment, sometimes coming home and wondering how it had all gone so badly.

"Lemme guess. Your 'punisher' guy - what's his name again? He's the costume you saw. S'why you've got a thing for 'im."

Best to start disabusing himself of the mental image that she's into Frank Castle. He wouldn't have let it go very far. Then again, woman like this wouldn't take 'no' seriously.

The 'having nothing' bit... that sounds like a wound running deep.

"Batman," Selina says obviously amused.

"He is the costume I saw but that's not where the thing between us started. That was ... later. At first, I was just trying to get out."

"I'm sayin' that's when your thing started for 'im. He probably didn't get the memo until ya slinked his way in a catsuit."
