002: Someone to Lean On [Location: The Sanctuary]
Spock was not human. He was not - for the most part - subject to the emotional stresses and strains that humans experienced every day. Unlike many Vulcans, however, he was aware of, and perhaps even sympathetic towards, the internal turmoils experienced by humans. (He was, after all, taking constant measures to avoid them himself.)
For that reason, he abandoned his makeshift laboratory as soon as the opportunity presented itself, making his way to the Sanctuary at a pace that did not fully betray the urgency he felt.
For once, the opportunity to leave had not been dictated by his experiments, but by the need of someone close to him. He could not begin to understand how Gaila's arrival had affected Nyota, and therefore did not attempt to. They had been close friends during their time as cadets, and that information alone was enough to alert him to how much the Orion's death must have affected Lieutenant Uhura. The urgency of Nero's attack on Vulcan, and the events that had followed it, had prevented her from mourning properly. Gaila's appearance in Taxon could be considered both a positive turn of events and an unpleasant complication. Only a discussion with Nyota would reveal which option to select.
He entered the Sanctuary swiftly, though not so swiftly that he appeared overly concerned. Nyota was a strong woman - that was one of the reasons why he had found himself drawn to her, against all logic and all reason - and she would not wish for pity. If she required assistance, comfort or simple conversation, she would receive it. If not, Spock would settle for knowing that she was aware of his presence and the steps he would take to support her whenever necessary.
OOC: Closed to Uhura and backdated to an unspecified time shortly after Gaila's arrival.

[location: sanctuary (for all)]
Since she couldn't sleep, she decided she would head downstairs. She thought she remembered there being a library somewhere in the Sanctuary and hoped to find something to read.
Her plans were changed, however, when she saw Spock standing in the foyer.
She headed down the rest of the steps and walked up to him, her expression the same careful mask she'd worn since Gaila had arrived. Showing concern, gratitude that he was here, but no emotion, because she worried that if she showed any, her tenuous grip on calm would slip and she would dissolve into tears.

In the end he settled for speaking briskly and matter-of-factly, folding his hands into their customary position behind his back.
"I am not disturbing you?" he asked, "If you are busy, I will return tomorrow."

She didn't want to go into why, though. Not until they were somewhere a little more private.

"Do you wish to proceed to a more private area of the Sanctuary?" he asked, "Or would you prefer to walk through the city?"
There were a number of locations in Taxon that could be considered relaxing to a human in the right frame of mind. They could provide suitable distractions.

She appreciated that he'd come by, especially at this hour of the night, to see how she was. That was why she figured he'd come by, anyway, but even if she was wrong, it was still nice to see him.

Like friends coming back from the dead.

sorry this is so late! <3
There was a long pause.
"And now Gaila."
No problem! ^_^
"I have spoken briefly to Cadet Gaila," he said, "She appeared to be adapting well to her new situation."
Which was even more remarkable when one considered that she had arrived directly from the Farragut, and was therefore fortunate to be alive at all.
ajhsfsjgk i'm sorry again, this weekend was crazy and i'm trying to catch up.
Not like she'd been doing any sleeping that night, anyway.
She paused suddenly and sighed, and there was a slight hitch in her breath. But she reigned it in and after a moment, it was like she hadn't stopped at all.
Nyota looked over her shoulder at Spock, her expression apologetic, and squeezed his hand.
"It's not much further. Just down this hall."
And then she continued walking.
It's fine, really! XD
"Cadet Gaila is a highly capable student," he noted, "It is likely that she will be able to apply this to the situation in which she has found herself."
In the absence of a more useful contribution, he squeezed her hand in return. He was not used to feeling so ... helpless. He was used to finding and carrying out the most logical course of action, and doing so with a high degree of success.
"If she requires medical treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder," he added, "I would suggest contacting Doctor McCoy."
you're amazing. :D
"I'll ask her about it in the morning," she said. She probably wouldn't ask her that directly, but if Gaila needed help of any kind, Uhura wanted to make sure she got it.
They finally reached the doors of the library and she squeezed his hand gently before letting go to let them both in.

"She is fortunate that she did not arrive alone," he noted. She was fortunate that she had friends like Nyota to see to her comfort.
Spock followed Nyota into the library. It was a pleasant room. In the future, he would endeavor to spend more time in it. Though he had no specific research topic in mind, educational reading was always beneficial.

She settled in one of the chairs and squeezed his hand, waiting for him to sit in the chair opposite her.

"If you wish to talk about the effects of Cadet Gaila's arrival," he said, with the air of someone testing highly unfamiliar waters, "I will endeavor to listen and, if you wish, to offer advice on the matter." He was not entirely impartial, but he was logical and his opinion could be considered useful. "However, if you would prefer to talk about other matters, I would be happy to assist in an attempt to ... distract you."
Her own attempt to offer comfort, some months ago now, had been considerably more eloquent. He did not believe Uhura would hold that against him.
