II: [ Accidental Voice ] Magic Hour

[ There's a sound of pages rustling. With everything that has happened in Taxon - dangerous vampires running amok, crazy people bombing everything regardless of intentions or who they'd hurt - Piper feels as though she should do something. She consults The Book of Shadows and while she's not sure it will work, she decides to give it a try. ]

In this night and in this hour
I call upon the Ancient Power
Heed my words, I beseech thee.

In this circle that is our home
protect us from the evils that roam
And ensure our safety.

[ she waits for something to happen - but after a pathetic puff of smoke in the air, nothing did. She sighs.] Right. Of course that won't work.

"Generally speaking, it works a little better if you use a name to invoke by."

[ she shoots a very dirty look at the tablet, not knowing that somehow it was on the whole time. ]

A name?

"Mmhmm, 'Ancient Power' is a bit general, I'd say. There's all sorts of ancient powers and you want to make sure you're getting on the blower with the right sort? Protection is all fine and dandy until you end up with Huitzilopochtli, who -- don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy -- but tends toward being a little more intense than your average person wants to deal with."

Tara is in the castle, which is presumably where Piper is too, but she doesn't want to show up to the other woman's room uninvited. But she is relieved to see the other woman got out in one piece. Shyly, she turns her tablet on and says, "S-so you got out of the castle okay?"

[ it all makes perfect sense, actually. Piper nods - not that the man can see it - but one thing isn't clear yet. ]

Well, it may be a bit general but it did work for us before and... um, who are you?

"I'm not saying it doesn't work, just that it is or was wise to be a little cautious. But, well, I think I'm in for the ~Ancient Powers~ on call at the moment, and I'm Hermes, by the way, so you really ought not worry anymore. Hello." D'aww. He's going to wave. Hi. :D? :D?

"Tara!" She fiddles with her tablet and shifts it to visual mode, before giving the woman a full-blown grin. "Yes, I did - thanks to you. And I'm relieved that you did, too."

She smiles and nods. "With a little help, yes. It was a crazy day, I think."

Introductions are better in visual mode, so Piper changes her setting for that. "I'm Piper," she offers, although she's still very unsure about this Hermes person. "Hi. And uh - what do you mean you're in for the Ancient Powers?" Because it sounds... well. Very strange.

Sorry, Hermes. You have to explain that to this lowly witch.

"It is strange, isn't it? And, well, I seem to be the only one holding the fort, if you'll pardon the colloquialism. Nobody here but us chickens, or rather, roosters." And tortoises. And dogs. But let's not get into all his various, representative animals at the moment.

She shakes her head and looks away for a moment. "It really was," Piper agrees. "Although I guess it's over now. And the strange part is, everything is back to the way it was before. It's like... nothing happened."

"So you're... one of those Ancient Powers?" Disbelief is very obvious in her tone.

Tara nods. "I noticed that." Softer, she adds, "Part of the castle caved in. And now it's like it never happened." Because even if it turned out alright, it was frightening at the time; she got in over her head, and now the castle itself seems like it was no big deal.

"Hermes as in Hermes and not the fellow who makes such lovely scarves." There's another little finger wave. Hello. :D?

"It did?" she asks. Maybe that was the sound they heard, before they parted ways. "That's just... I don't even know what that is. It seems like we live in a place that just rights itself." Like magic.

Piper will just chuckle here. Very amused? That, she is. "Right. Of course. That's why you know all about those Ancient Powers and that I have to be specific when invoking them."

Hermes is still talking on his tablet, but he's doing so from the doorway to whichever room Piper is current standing in. "Exactly, muffin. You never know who's listening. It's all very exciting, don't you think?"

She nods. "But there isn't..." Tara hesitates, but Piper's already seen her do a spell, and it sounds like Piper was just trying one herself. So she presses on and says, "There aren't any traces, like magic usually leaves."

"Holy--"

Piper drops her tablet and puts up both hands in an unconscious desire to freeze whoever it is that spoke behind her. It may not work - after all, what are the odds that it will against something like Hermes?

"How-- how did you do that?"

"You already said it, kiddo." 'Holy', that is. "I'd say I didn't mean to startle you, but let's be honest here -- and I'm always honest as the day is long -- I kinda did mean to make you jump. It helps to prove my point, don't you agree?"

"Traces?" she inquires. It seems like today is a day for learning things she didn't know before - like being specific when invoking the Ancient Powers, and now, that magic actually leaves behind a residue of some sort.

"That you're that Hermes?" she says, clutching her chest in an effort to slow down her heart and stepping back. Piper doesn't know exactly what to say or think in face of such an... entity.

"Well, um... congratulations? For proving your point." And for giving her a mild case of heart attack.

"Oh... yeah. I mean, maybe there's types of magic I don't know about, but where I'm from, when a spell's been done, there's usually a sort of... psychic residue? If there's not, it's either not magic... or you should be really scared of whoever's doing it." Tara's a little embarrassed - she in no way feels like an expert, but she also feels like she should explain.

"The 'that' himself," he says with a little bow and flourish. "Thank you and, now, you've called, I've answered, what can I do to help? You wanted some general protection? I'm rather good at that."

Right. Time to get down to business.

"Oh," Piper says. It hasn't really occurred to her to think about that - the aftermath of a spell once it's done its job. "And... and do you think whoever's doing this to us... we should be scared of them?"
