Case #1 [holo | location: the sanctuary]

Kate had been circling the crime scene, taking in every nuance to aid in her investigation. She had knelt down to inspect a footprint in the dirt, when the dirt suddenly disappeared and was replaced by a cool silver floor.

"What the hell?"

She stood up, looking around. Everything had changed. The crime scene was gone, replaced by a circular room. She spun around, confused. Where was the door? Jumping down from the platform, she sprinted to the wall, stretching her hands out to feel for a door.

"Hello? Hey, anybody here?"

She pounded on the wall, though stinging hands were her only reward. As she inspected her hands, she noticed the silver bracelet on her wrist, and immediately tried to pull it off. Heart beating rapidly, she realized it wouldn't budge.

She circled the room, panicking slightly. On her second pass around the small room, she noticed the small table. On it laid what appeared to be a remote control, but upon closer inspection it looked to be some kind of cell phone. Maybe she could call for help?

She picked it up, but there did not appear to be any way to dial. She touched various places on the screen, but nothing seemed to happen. Then she heard a sliding sound, and looked up to see a door open a few feet from her. She immediately set the device down, heading for the door. It slid shut again before she could make it.

"Dammit!"

She kicked the door for good measure, then walked back over and picked up the remote/phone/whatever it was.

The door opened. Kate looked from the door, to the device, then back to the door. She set the device down again.

The door closed. Kate picked the device up again, then grinned as the door opened.

"Ok, ok. I get it."

Spencer simply nodded in reply, then looked out the window. He could ask her if she liked being an officer, perhaps. Or if she was originally from New York City. How old was she? All of these were viable options, but Spencer bit his tongue. He was never any good at small talk.

"37 days."

The train stopped and Spencer stood up.

"My apartment is 2 blocks from here."

Just what Kate planned on doing when they got there, he had no idea.

"Those are the indigenous people of this area. They're known as Extras. They won't speak to you unless you speak to them. They work in the shops around here.. mostly stay out of the way of those of us who were beamed in here from elsewhere."

They rounded the corner and he pointed to his building ahead.

"My apartment is in that- oh... that's new..."

Sitting parked against the curb in front of Spencer's building was a motorcycle.

Her bike? Spencer raised his eyebrows slightly.

"I suppose that's what came with you, then..."

Though why was it parked outside of his apartment building?

"The items just.. come with people. Again, no explanation. Perhaps the aliens want us to feel more at home by having a piece of it with us."

He paced around it, studying it.

"As for why it's here... not a clue. Perhaps so that you would find it. And now that you have I'm sure you're very happy."

And Spencer can go up to his apartment and back into his shell.

"As I mentioned before, it was nice to meet you, Ms. Beckett."

Spencer sensed that he wasn't going to get any peace tonight. In a way it made sense though. Spencer had given Kate answers and showed her around a bit. In essence, he was the only one that she "knew" here. Had he not been just as scared that first week when he was here, alone in a hotel room? He sighed.

"Yes. I rode the transit around for a bit and decided that I liked this neighborhood. Then I simply walked around a bit and found this building and an apartment that suited me...."

He paused, gazing down at his feet.

"Listen... I can sense that you're feeling a bit scared, and that's normal... My apartment has an extra room if.. you'd like to use it for a few days until you find one of your own."

"You're welcome..."

Spencer didn't much like the idea of having a roommate. He greatly enjoyed his peace and quiet. Still he felt that he should do this favor for her. She would be out in a week or so.

He led her up the stairs to his second floor apartment and took out what looked like an ancient key, which he placed in the ancient lock on the door. Spencer ushered her inside after opening it.

"The spare room is in the back, on the left past the bathroom. Sheets and such should be in the linen closet."

Spencer turned slightly red.

"Um. Well. You can borrow some of mine.... just so you don't have to wear the same thing over and over..."

He sat down in his antique chair at his desk in the living room and began to look through his papers.

"They were just... here after I picked the place. My clothes from back home..."

Spencer was a bit distracted by his work in front of him.

Spencer looked up from his work, then made his way back to Kate's bedroom.

"There was nothing in that closet the last time I looked."

An uneasy feeling had settled in the pit of her stomach. Clothing had only appeared to him after he had chosen this apartment as his permanent residence. Did the appearance of clothes mean that Kate would be staying here longer than he thought?

"I don't know."

But he had a suspicion. She had unconsciously chosen this place and the aliens had listened. Spencer shuffled back into the living room wondering why he had somehow acquired this woman. This is what he got for being helpful, apparently.

Spencer was silent, staring at the papers on his desk for a while before he answered.

"I don't mind having you here for up to a week, Ms. Beckett."

But he knew it would be longer than that. Her clothes were here. This was where she wanted to be, though Spencer had no idea why.
