005: [ visual ] chivalry isn't dead

Usually, Arthur is good with public speaking. He's made countless rousing speeches, and being a prince has meant a great deal of being thrust into centre stage. It's a bit different when you're talking into a funny little machine though, and you can't actually see the masses of people you're addressing. Still, when he speaks, it's with an even (and slightly regal) confidence.

"My name is Prince Arthur Pendragon of Camelot. There are a few of you with whom I've spoken, and many more I have not."

"I'm making this announcement because I seek the assistance of those who would protect this city from the dangers that all too frequently seem to assail it."

"My kingdom, at home, is protected by a force of knights. We work together to ensure the safety of our people, and to defend against attacks - be it from fell creatures or simple troublemakers."

"It is my goal to establish a force like that here in Taxon. Being a knight requires courage, fortitude and discipline. You need only respond if you possess these qualities. Some experience in combat would be desirable, but if you have none and still wish to serve, I would be prepared to teach you."

Sam said 'uhm', you see. And Arthur's kind of an annoying hardass.

Yeah. I mean I was a hunter at home. 'Fell creatures' as you would say. It's just...in my world I wouldn't call myself a knight.

Ah, it's always a terminology issue. This is one of the problems with being Medieval.

"But you fought? Risked your life? Saved people?"

Sol rarely actually bothers paying attention to his tablet - for various reasons, mostly 'incredible disinterest in what you people have to say', he's never been the most social of creatures - but now and then something will catch his eye and sometimes, miraculously, he even responds.

Such as now.

"We should probably talk."

He has fairly fucking extensive combat experience, but Sol's not unaware of the potential sticky issue of exactly how he works- so he's not quite freely volunteering yet.

Arthur is quite similar to Sol in his tablet habits, for the record. Though this partially has to do with the fact that he still has trouble fathoming how the bloody things work.

"I take it that means you're interested, then." Which is actually a question, even if it sounds like a statement.

"Tentatively. I'm concerned about some methodology issues that might come up." His tone is sahara-dry here, as he lights a cigarette and pushes the building plans to one side on his desk.

"In what sense?"

He requires just a little bit more elucidation on that one. Not that 'methodology issues' isn't a truly wondrous piece of tact.

The Doctor appears on the screen, looking a bit dirty from his work. He sniffs and stares at this Arthur. This friend of Morgana's, as he's come to think of him.

"So, let me understand this. Instead of thinking about how to escape this place, you're focused on how to protect it? From what, exactly?"

"Not it, the people. It might have escaped your notice, but it's quite a dangerous place. Vampires. Irresponsible idiots who endanger us all according to their whims."

Yes, Arthur is not pleased with the Doctor. He nearly got Morgana killed, and that is simply not cool.

"Oi, 'irresponsible idiots'! That's a very rude thing to call all of the vampires in the city," the Doctor says. "And, really, I think the important thing to realize is that if we were all free of this place, we wouldn't have to worry about things like vampires. Aren't that many wandering about in my world, at any rate."

"I was referring to you." Arthur answers coldly, not having any particular scruples about being rude, ever.

"Your last attempt to 'free' us did nothing but cause harm and injury. Until someone has an idea that might actually work, the innocent people held captive here deserve some form of protection."

Morgana is standing out of view, listening to Arthur's proposal to Taxon.

She's looking a bit self-satisfied. While she's not actually going to say it, she's happy Arthur is being industrious.

In her head, she starts thinking of which room she plans to turn into the gathering place. There are a couple of lesser halls that would do.

Transmission complete, Arthur glances over his shoulder at Morgana, giving her a wry look. "Spying on me, are you?"

Morgana sees his wry look and raises him a smirk.

"You were talking to everyone, were you not? I happen to be within earshot, that is all."

"That's convenient." He replies dryly, though it's evident that he's not actually bothered about her listening.

"So what do you think of the idea?"

Yes, he does value her opinion. Try not to look too happy about it.

"The hell!"

Arthur was probably not expecting quite such an... emphatic response, but that's what he's going to get, along with a look of pure blazing outrage.

Apparently he hit a nerve.

Well, that's odd. Arthur arches an eyebrow, looking... disdainfully confused, if such a combination is possible.

"...is there a problem?"

Minus the official tone, he recognizes the voice, one he hasn't put a face to until now. Or a name, for that matter, but he's far from mollified on that count. "Problem, he says. I've some patience with fools, but none with liars."

Well. That's blunt.

Now, this catches her attention. She'd been a little exasperated by the whole notion of having to find a job that paid. The acquisition of wealth was a direct violation of the Jedi Codes and she'd spent the better part of the past few days meditating on whether or not it was a true offense if it was necessary to survival in this world. The whole thing gave her headache and being a few days shy of a full year's stay here in Taxon, her grip on what was morally sound and what remained morally ambiguous within the lines the Jedi Order had marked out for all the Knights to live within was slacking, considerably.

This proposition of Arthur's, however, gives her hope. It's easier to rationalize working when the work she would potentially be doing was what she essentially did back home. Play guardian, just happen to get compensated for it (and she fully intended to use the funds for strictly living expenses and nothing selfishly wanted or recreational; she wasn't one of the Lost Twenty, for Force's sake).

"Your Highness," she begins, "my Republic, too, was protected by knights. I am one of them and have more than my fair share of combat experience, having been a general of the Grand Clone Army prior to my arrival here. I would be honored to serve."

"This Republic of yours allows women to serve as knights?"

Forgive his rather Medieval outlook, he doesn't mean to be hideously sexist. His tone isn't derisive however, it's more genuinely surprised with just a note of skeptical. He's been trying to adapt to the weird cultural differences of people in Taxon, but he still has a way to go.

There's a flash of annoyance across Siri's face. If this young man had not previously proclaimed himself a prince, she would've said something sarcastic or snarky with her chin raised defiantly in that way she'd learned to do in the wake of her padawan's leaving of the Order. However, the structure of things and her desperate clinging to that which she remembers keeps her at bay, keeps her calm.

"They allow all manner of gender and species, sir. That's not what makes us qualified to be knights; it's our talent, our midichlorian counts. The Republic is not as xenophobic as the Separatists make it out to be; nor is the Order."
